On 3rd February 2026, Msilikali SACCO participated in a tree planting exercise organized by Chapter 2 SACCOs at Chatata Primary School in Lilongwe. The event was attended by various stakeholders, including MUSCCO’s Head of Cooperative Development Institution(CDI) and Projects Mr Leroy Banda, Central Region SACCOs Chapter 2 Chairperson Mr Alex Mtungama, and officials from different SACCOs.
In his remarks, Mr Mtungama emphasized the importance of SACCOs extending their role beyond financial services to actively engage in environmental conservation initiatives such as tree planting. He further explained that tree planting aligns with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, as it promotes environmental sustainability, supports community development, and demonstrates responsible and accountable cooperative governance.
He also noted that SACCOs are guided by Cooperative Principle No. 7—Concern for the Community; which calls on cooperatives to give back to the societies they serve. He added that the Chapter, working in collaboration with the school committee, will ensure that the planted trees are properly cared for and sustainably maintained.
