MSILIKALI SACCO PLANTS TREES FOR A GREENER TOMORROW

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers participating in tree planting exercise at Kamuzu Barracks

On 22 January 2025, Msilikali SACCO partnered with the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) in a tree planting exercise held at Kamuzu Barracks in Lilongwe. This initiative accentuated the critical need for environmental conservation and the restoration of degraded forest landscapes, a growing concern in Malawi and globally as the effects of climate change intensify. As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Msilikali SACCO made a generous donation of 3,000 Mibawa tree seedlings to support this initiative which are known for their resilience and ability to restore soil fertility.

The event was graced by MDF Headquarters Joint Commandant, Colonel Precious Basikolo and MSACCO Board of Director, Major Reverend Andrew Kamponda. Commenting on the donation, Major Kamponda said MSACCO adheres to Cooperative principle number 7, which calls the SACCO to have concern for the communities; mandating it to give back to the community in which it exists and operate its business, demonstrating its responsibility not only through financial services but also through meaningful environmental initiatives. He also highlighted the environmental challenges facing the country, such as prolonged droughts and unpredictable rainfall, urging communities to shift from merely planting trees to actively nurturing them.

The partnership with MDF in tree planting is not a new endeavour for MSACCO. This yearly practice has become a cornerstone activity, reaffirming the SACCO’s responsibility to the environment and its role in addressing the pressing challenges of environmental degradation and climate change. Through initiatives like this, MSACCO is not only contributing to the fight against climate change but also empowering future generations to thrive in a healthier, more sustainable world.
